The portrait of Portuguese fashion and that of the designers that currently represent it is reflected in MUDE – Museum of Design and Fashion until June 10th, 2012.
“Tell me what you like … and I will tell you who you are” is from Proust’s questionnaire for producing the «psychological ID of each designer, revealing a bit more about their personality and state of mind, aware that each response offers only a photograph of the present moment», reveals the organization.
Twenty-two active designers are part of this exhibition, curated by Bárbara Coutinho and Executive Commissioner Anabela Becho, in a total of 60 sets covering a period between the late 80s and the present day. Ana Salazar, José António Tenente, Filipe Faísca and Luís Buchinho are part of the safe names in national fashion that are represented here, joined by new values such as the White Tent and Os Burgueses.
Bárbara Coutinho added other questions to the traditional survey, such as the book, the movie and the music of reference. «It is curious because, for example, José António Tenente complied with the request and brought only one copy of each, which is illustrative of his accuracy. On the other hand, Storytailors (João Branco and Luis Sanchez) went over the top and came with several books and countless songs. When you look at all these objects and then at the garments that are in front of us, we can understand their creative universe».
These objects of inspiration can be seen alongside three sets by each designer: a piece from early in their career, another reference one and another from the last collection. «What I feel, and hope, is that the public who come here, especially the international public, will have a showcase of fashion made in Portugal», says Bárbara Coutinho.
